C.
*Daniel Gunston (1799-1894) married Martha
Bunyon( 1802-1868) in St George in
the East, London in 1823.
Notes for Daniel Gunston:
Daniel
was christened on 4th August 1799 in Aston Rowant in Oxfordshire. In
1841 he had moved to St James, Clerkenwell. By 1851, Daniel and the family were
living at 110 Goswell Street, Clerkenwell, where his occupation was that of a
cheesemonger. In 1861 (when he was
61) the family had moved to 83 Connaught Street, Paddington and Daniel was still
in the same profession. Living with them was William Gunston (brother), who at
71 was the proprietor of houses. There was also a servant employed (Robert
Piddington).
Martha died in 1868 and by the next census,
Daniel was living on his own with a servant (Margaret Kiehl) at 20 Oakley Road,
Islington where he is recorded as living on independent means.
At the age of 81, in 1881, Daniel had moved to
137 Newington Green Road, Islington with a different housekeeper (Susanna
Heston). He is now recorded as
living on his house property. Still alive in 1891, he had moved next door to 135
Newington Green Road where his occupation is recorded as that of a retired
provision dealer. Once again he had a different housekeeper/domestic, Susan
Hester. This where he died, in 1894.
Daniel seems to have been the victim of quite a
few thefts.

D.
*Thomas Daniel Edward Gunston (1824-1887)
married Caroline Elizabeth Hill (1824-1904) in Islington in 1845.
Notes for T. D. E. Gunston:
In 1851, age 27, Thomas Daniel Edward Gunston is
living at 84 Upper Street, Islington, where he is in cheesemonger employment. At
the address were 2 children, a house servant (Jane Dowell), a foreman to the
cheesemonger (James Halton) and a second shopman to the cheesmonger (George
Hollond). Also there were Emma and Sarah A Craig who are recorded as being joint
partners to the head of the house (Thomas) and they were baby linen warehouse
keeprs, Julia Naybour was a shop woman to the Craig sisters and Martha Luke a
house servant to them all.
By 1861, Thomas and caroline seem to have moved
into another house on the same street where he is a cheesmonger.
Employed are a house servant and a nurse for baby Eleanor.
1871 sees the family in 113 Upper Street,
Islington and Thomas is now a poulterer employing only one servant.
The 1881 census shows the family moved to 69
Mildmay Road, Islington. Only Eleanor is living with her parents and Thomas had
become a provision agent.
Daniel died in 1887 and in 1891 Caroline was a
pensioner boarding at 191 Isleton Road, Islington. She moved to 16 Parliament
Hill, Hampstead before 1901 and died there in 1904.
In the British Museum, there is a late 8th
century Anglo-Sxon silver knife mount with a runic inscription that had been
found in London. It was the gift of Thomas D. E. Gunston. Could it be our Thomas
Daniel Edward?

E.
*Hubert Fitzthomas (Percy) Gunston (1859-23 Jan
1945) married (1) Kate Elizabeth Widdows (1861-1929) in 1878 in Shoreditch,
Middlesex. She was born in Stoke Newington, London. On 4 October 1913 he married
(2) Julia Warren (1868-4 July 1936) in Fulham Registery Office. She was born in
Barking, Essex and died in Fulham.
Notes for Hubert Fitzthomas (Percy) Gunston:
Although born Hubert Fizthomas, he was always known as Percy and seems to
have dropped the middle name completely.
Married twice, Hubert had 3 children by Kate and 9 by Julia.
In 1881, married to Kate, Hubert (Percy) was a
cheesmonger living at 120 Winston Road, St Marys, London.
No record can be found at present of any divorce
or when they separated but in 1891 Kate is reported as being a widow and living
at 38 Defoe Street, Stoke Newington, where she supported the children by being a
dressmaker.
On the 1901 census, Hubert
(Percy) and Julia are recorded as being husband and wife, but they didn’t
actually marry until 1913. He is said to be working in the water trade, but at
his marriage he is a furniture salesman, and two days later (recorded on the
marriage certificate of his son
Hubert’s wedding) he is recorded as a cheesemonger. At this wedding there is a
photo of Julia and her daughter Ethel with the Owens family (family of wife of
son Hubert) but no one else from the Warren-Gunston family. Either they weren’t
there or just not in the photo.
Percy was living with his daughter Ethel and she
found she was unable to cope so he went into a workhouse/old peoples home, and
during the 2nd World War he was evacuated to Scotland where he died
in Carluke in 1945. (see “extra note” below under Notes for Julia Warren)
Notes for Kate Elizabeth Widdows:
Kate was buried in Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke
Newington, on 5 Jan 1929, aged 69 years (burial 148911, section C04, index
7S13).
Notes for Julia Warren:
At the time of her death in 1936, aged 68, Julia
was living at 354 Fulham Palace Road, and had lived there for 20 years, having
been in Fulham for 40 years. She had suffered from heart trouble for some time,
and is buried at North Sheen Cemetery.
[extra note: I am sure I visited that house with
my parents when Auntie Ethel and Uncle Ben were living there in about 1950, when
I was about 11 or 12. It was certainly Fulham Palace Road although I can’t
remember the number. If so, it would seem that both Julia and Hubert Percy could
have been living there at the time of Julia’s death, and that Hubert Percy
stayed on, and perhaps Ethel and Ben moved in to look after him until it became
too much for Ethel and her father went to the workhouse/old folks home? Shortly
after my visit Ethel and Ben moved to Arundel to live in Ford Road, the same
road we did. Jackie]
